15TH YEAR IN SUCCESSION OF COOP/ECHO CUP WINS

For the first time in 20 odd years, what everyone has know as the Echo Cup changed its sponsor and name to the CO-OP Cup in 2018. Southport having won the cup for the last fourteen (14) years in succession. It attracts one of the best atmospheres you will ever come across in a swimming pool. With a packed balcony and at least 40 swimmers/helpers in support of the eight teams, the Everton Park pool is crammed with around 800 people. Over the last fifteen(15) years Southport Swimming Club, have developed to become one of the top teams in the County, North West and the Country.

During the last next 15years we had some close shaves. For two years while a third of the A team were training in Tenerife, Liverpool Penguins gave Southport a couple of close finals with us only coming out on top by 10 points. One year and only one year, to fill a spare place the organisers allowed Southport to enter two teams. Which enabled us to show the strength in the club, coming 1st and 4th in the final. Then four years ago a rejuvenated Everton where leading at the half way point in the final, showing the philosophy of ‘no surrender’ the Southport warriors came through yet again to take top spot. The last four years the result has been more convincing.

The 2018 final took place at Everton Park last Sunday 11th November again with a capacity crowd with the same atmosphere as ever . All the swimmers loving the occasion parading around with flags, hats, face painted, horns and drums. Then the swimming started. The first 8 events are teams races Southport went into a commanding lead with 6 first places and 2 second places.

From then on the Towns Team were under no pressure with some fantastic times and results at the conclusion of the 48event gala as the final points were read out.

Final Result Southport 335, Crosby 270, Ormskirk 242, Hoylake 194, Prescot 190, Halton 180, Everton 165 and Garston 157
